Animal Cruelty Annotated Bib

“Animal Cruelty Facts and Statistics.” The Humane Society of the United States. The
Humane  Society of the United States, 31 Aug. 2015. Web. 08 Mar. 2016.
The article Animal Cruelty Facts and Statistics is about who abuses animals, how often animal abuse is done, who most of the cruelty is done against and possible links between animal cruelty and domestic abuse. The purpose of this article was to inform readers about where animal cruelty occurs and why it may occur. It also discusses specific states within the United States that have adopted laws that make animal cruelty a felony. When researching animal cruelty I think that this source is a good one to look at because it provides causes, effects, and punishments of animal cruelty. I believe that this source is very useful and reliable when being used to talk about either animal or domestic abuse. I used this source and will continue to use this source to discuss why people tend to abuse animals. I will also use this article to discuss laws that are being put into place that prohibit the abuse of animals. I feel that this article will shape my essays and research and provide a good amount of information about animal cruelty.
“Species List.” World Wildlife Fund, n.d. Web. 08 Mar. 2016.
The World Wildlife Fund’s website’s page Species Directory provides a list of all of the animals that are considered endangered throughout the world today. The page is composed of three columns: Common Name, Scientific Name, and Conservation Status. The common name column lists the animals known names, the names that they are called on a daily basis. The conservation status column specifies whether the animal is, least concern, near threatened, vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered. The purpose of showing the conservation status is to let everyone know which animals are in danger of extinction. It is also a way of knowing which animals are protected against hunting and poaching. This source is useful when researching extinction, endangerment, or poaching/hunting. I believe that this page can be extremely useful when it comes to giving examples of endangered animals and this is how I used this page in my first essay. I consider this source reliable because the World Wildlife Fund is a world-wide well known organization that is built around protecting these animals and informing people about how they can protect these animals. This article was helpful to me by providing specific animals/species that I could use as examples of animals that are becoming endangered due to some poaching/hunting. It also provided me with animals that I would like to look into and expand upon in the future.
Composing an annotated bibliography is something that the importance can vary from writer to writer. To me I feel that it is more important when writing larger and more concentrated papers. When writing more concentrated papers, an annotated bibliography allows an individual to arrange all of their sources and clearly see how they used each source or will use each source. I also feel that the annotated bib is helpful because you can write it before or after writing a paper. In a way, it can be written as a way to pre-write or review a paper. I feel it is more helpful and that it does not tend to hinder an individuals research process but I can see that it is possible that someone could become overwhelmed when trying to write an annotated bibliography and that is could cause more problems than solutions.

Thoughts Behind Animal Cruelty

There are a lot of articles out there about animal cruelty which can make comparing definitions and thoughts hard but certain sources end up coming down to a same idea or thought process. In Animal Cruelty and Domestic Violence by the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the main topic of the article is that there is a correlation between the abuse of animals and domestic violence within a family. The article suggests that people who abuse animals are likely abusive toward people, usually family members, or vice versa. It also talked about how sometimes children start to abuse animals. The articles reasoning behind why children abuse animals was that the child was probably abused in the past or is currently being abused. According to the publisher of this article, animal abuse is a visible sign of a family that is in trouble. A statement that further connects domestic violence and animal cruelty.

In the next article, Animal Cruelty Facts and Statistics published by the Humane Society of the United States, I also found that they too believe that there is a correlation between domestic violence and animal cruelty. The Humane Society specifically stated that “cruelty to animals is strongly correlated with other crimes, including violence against people”. The article went on to expand on the idea that the idea could go deeper and be an emotional/psychological problem expressed by people. Animal Hoarding, when someone has an abnormally high number of pets without being able to properly take care of them, was said to be an indicator of people who need help socially or mentally.

The Humane Society of the United States continued to include more reasoning and statistics than the first article. Statistics such as animal abusers tending to be men under the age of 30 and animal hoarders mostly being women over the age of 60. Also instead of just talking about the idea that there is a correlation between the two ideas, the Humane Society article specified which types of animals are being victimized because of domestic issues, these animals include: dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. Although there was no specific counterargument obviously presented in the articles, I believe that the Humane Society article is a more well focused and more informed source when it comes to knowing about this topic. I feel that there absolutely could be a connection between animal cruelty and domestic violence within a household. I will definitely be looking deeper into the idea while I continue in my research.

Animal hoarding Animal Hoarding is a form of animal cruelty because the owner fails to provide proper care for their animals leaving them neglected.

Animal Cruelty Introduction

Animal Cruelty is an emotional topic that touches the hearts of many. For those who don’t now exactly what animal cruelty is, it is  when someone hurts or does not properly care for an animal. When most people think about animal cruelty they think of dogs, cats and maybe even horses, but the issue goes farther and deeper than just domesticated animals. animals such as members of the big cat family, ocean animals, and even animals that look large enough to defend themselves with out any help find themselves in danger of being abused or neglected. With every passing year this worldwide issue continues to grow and remain uncontrolled. Even though the situation remains uncontrolled it is not without the effort to attempt to put an end to the cruelty. Organizations such as the Humane Society and the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) were created to help bring about animal cruelty awareness and potentially an end to it as well.

I am writing about this topic because I believe that more people should be aware and take the time to learn about it. Though I have my own views and opinions I will be showing both sides of the argument as I progress through my research. I believe that if people knew and understood the effects of animal cruelty not only on animals but also on the world as a whole, that they will look deeper into the topic and want to express their opinions as well no matter what side of the argument they are on.
